How do you destroy your idols?
But how do you replace them?
How to Destroy Your Idols
We replace them by first putting them to death and then replacing them with the love of God. The opposite of idolatry is worship. We must remove our deathly idols that we worship and then replace it with worship of Jesus Christ.
Paul writes to the Colossians, “You have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things…put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire and greed, which is idolatry .” (Colossians 3:1-5)
Paul commands us to put our idols to death, not just down. We put our idols to death by beholding the glory of Jesus (2 Cor 3:18) and constantly setting our minds on him. Tim Keller once said, “Jesus must become more beautiful to your imagination and more attractive to your heart then your idols. That is what will replace your counterfeit god.”
If you are in Christ, you have to know that God loves you and the way he treats you is based on Jesus’ performance, not yours. You have to hear God say to you in the depths of your heart, “You are my beloved child, whom I delight. I love you and nothing you do or say, because I have chosen you and because of Jesus’ perfect performance, can change that.” Nothing will free you more like hearing that from your Creator.
All of this comes out of a lifestyle of worship. By that I mean the joyful but diligent devotion to the spiritual disciplines: Bible reading, prayer, discipleship, serving a church, corporate worship, etc. We must get the true peace and joy that can only come from Jesus and that comes as we worship him.
